Group CBS is developing talent through Group CBS U, our electrical testing/engineering technician apprenticeship.

Electrical apprentices with their certificatesThe electrical industry needs more skilled people. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of electrical engineers will grow 8% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. Many of those openings will come from the need to replace workers who retire and demand from growing industries such as AI and data centers and renewable energy.

Group CBS is helping close that gap by developing talent early. Through Group CBS U, our electrical testing/engineering technician apprenticeship, new team members receive paid, full-time training at our Denton, Texas facility while they gain the hands-on experience to grow into a promising career.

Six Apprentices Kick Off with the Fundamentals

Six new apprentices recently began the program to start building the knowledge every electrical professional depends on. Week one focuses on safety: Apprentices learned how to recognize hazards and assess risk before performing electrical work, covering lockout/tagout procedures, confined space awareness, incident energy and electrical hazard protection, and safe work practices.

Week two turned to the science behind the work. Classroom instruction in electrical theory, voltage, current, resistance, power, and electromagnetic principles was paired with hands-on lab exercises. The apprentices learned to use digital multimeters and adjustable power supplies, measure voltage, current, and resistance, and build and evaluate basic circuits of their own.

A Paid Path to a High-Demand Field

Group CBS’ apprenticeship is a four-year program that combines training with on-the-job experience. Apprentices are paid from day one and finish the program free of student debt from their training.

By the time they complete the program, apprentices have years of professional experience and specialized skills in a technical field with steady demand. From there, they can continue to grow into senior technician and supervisor roles.

Apprentices will benefit from the team of more than 150 NETA-certified technicians at Group CBS companies. Through the Power of One, our companies provide solutions across the complete life cycle of electric power systems, which gives apprentices exposure to a wide range of equipment, standards, and real-world problems to solve.

For the six apprentices currently in the program, the first two weeks were only the beginning. We look forward to watching them grow into the next generation of electrical professionals.
